A Little History of Grand Prairie, Texas

Grand Prairie, Texas, who is now celebrating a Century, has history dating as far back as 1846 before it was incorporated in 1909.  Generations gather at Grandma's house for a Sunday picnic. Brightly colored sails glide across the glass surface of Joe Pool Lake. Neighbors greet neighbors as they garden, walk and bike.  An early morning foursome swings against a backdrop of emerald fairways.  Fathers, mothers, kids and teachers cheer at Friday night high school football games. All of this goes on in the heart of one of the nation's busiest and most prosperous urban centers.

The City of Grand Prairie offers relaxation, family fun, friendly neighbors and a smart place to live and do business. In Grand Prairie, families who have lived here for generations welcome newcomers who come to Grand Prairie for the same reasons the natives don't leave—location and hometown atmosphere. Grand Prairie has grown from 15,000 people in 1940 to around 161,000 at present day, making it the seventh largest city in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, 16th largest city in Texas and the sixth fastest-growing 100,000+ city in the nation.

Conveniently located between Dallas and Fort Worth, Grand Prairie offers a friendly home town atmosphere along with a variety of fine cuisine and recreational activities from Don Juan’s Mexican restaurant, Nokia Theater, and Grand Prairie Air Hogs to Lone Star Park and Joe Pool Lake.
